The aztec dream

Posted on July 4, 2012 By adcitlali

The Aztec Dream

I want to join that sweet abyss of lethargic dreams
where consciousness is optional
and memories are allowed to disappear

I fear the seconds
the light and the person in the mirror
the one who can’t appreciate solitude

I long for distance, silence
Those ghostly noises can only talk about you

This suffocating reality
                               is an endless bad dream

I want to wake up
disintegrate the nightmare

Join the ancient aztecs in their rhythmic dance
invoke a new sun
wake up to real life

XXVII-IV-MMXII

This poem is dedicated to Charlie’s friend…

There is an old Prehispanic belief about life and death… I understand that the Toltecs were the first ones to believe that life was just a bad dream, a dream in which one experiences pain, doubts, fear. Life was the state or place where humans were at the mercy of gods, their gods. Prehispanic gods are, in general, dual gods of, e.g., life and dead, creation and destruction, night and day, etc. The belief says that when one dies, one wakes up to true life, to reality, and there is no more pain. The gods have no control over the one that wakes up; humans are finally free, loved, eternally happy.
